Class IV
UL 2218A tested impact-resistance rating for a natural hardwood shake. Ask for the report, then compare the actual product specifications.

ENDURASHAKE / NATURAL HARDWOOD ROOFING
Real wood shake roofing for hail country.
Distinctive by nature. Independently tested for the elements.

01 / AN ORIGINAL, BY NATURE
You don’t choose a distinctive home just to put an ordinary roof on it.
EnduraShake is cut from tropical hardwood, with the grain and variation that make natural wood unmistakable. It isn’t a composite molded to look like wood or steel stamped with a grain pattern.
Each shake is made from one of our hardwood species from Suriname, South America. Our production process gives EnduraShake its name—and supports its weather-resistant performance.
No plastic. No stamped metal. Just wood.

THE MATERIAL, AT A GLANCE
Published manufacturer specifications. Confirm current dimensions, roof loading, and installation requirements for your project.
02 / BEAUTY, WITH EVIDENCE
Three standards. A clearer conversation with your architect, roofer, and insurer.
*Performance depends on the specified construction. Ratings describe test performance and do not guarantee protection from every storm or fire.
Safety & certificationsLET THE DOCUMENTATION START THE CONVERSATION
Ask your insurance agent about the Class IV rating.
Impact-resistant roofing may qualify for premium savings. Before choosing a roof, ask your agent to confirm current product eligibility, required documentation, and any discount for your home.
That gives you something more useful than an assumption: an answer specific to your policy.
Under certain conditions.
03 / THE LONG VIEW
Permastrong reports that EnduraShake has lasted up to 70 years under certain conditions. Its hardwood has natural resistance to decay, fungus, and subterranean and dry-wood termites.
Service life varies with climate, roof design, installation, and care. Request written warranty terms and maintenance instructions; the reported life is not a lifetime guarantee.
04 / CONSIDERING A CEDAR SHAKE ROOF?
Real grain. Natural character. Then look closely at the specific product and complete roof assembly.
| What to compare | EnduraShake | Your cedar option |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Natural tropical hardwood | Confirm the cedar species and product being proposed. |
| Hail resistance | UL 2218 Class IV | Request the specific product’s impact-test rating. |
| Fire resistance | ASTM E108 Class C | Check the rating of the complete proposed roof assembly. |
| Service life | Up to 70 years reported under certain conditions | Compare documented service history and warranty terms. |
| Decay and termites | Natural resistance reported by Permastrong | Ask about natural resistance and any treatment used. |
| Care and installation | Request current written specifications and care guidance | Request the same documents for a like-for-like comparison. |
Cedar products differ. Use current documentation for the exact products being proposed rather than assuming all cedar roofs perform alike.
05 / PRESERVE THE ARCHITECTURAL INTENT
Historic restoration calls for more than a look-alike. Natural wood can help preserve the depth, texture, and architectural character that make a building worth protecting.
EnduraShake’s published history includes a 2006 Historic Rehabilitation Award from Texas Preservation. Ask us how its documentation can support your architect’s project review.
Historic district, HOA, building-code, and fire approvals are specific to the property and proposed assembly.

08 / BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Every home is different.
We’re here to talk about yours.
EnduraShake carries a UL 2218 Class IV impact rating. That is a tested level of impact resistance, not a promise that every hailstorm will leave every roof undamaged. Ask for the test documentation and discuss the complete roof assembly with your architect.
Yes. EnduraShake is cut from natural tropical hardwood species from Suriname, South America. It is not plastic, molded composite, or stamped metal. Natural grain and color vary from piece to piece.
People sometimes search for wood roof tiles or wood shingles, but Permastrong describes EnduraShake as a natural hardwood shake roofing system. Ask for the current product specifications to confirm dimensions, coverage, and installation requirements.
A Class IV impact rating may qualify for savings. Ask your insurer to confirm current product eligibility and the discount, if any, for your location and policy. Do not assume a rating guarantees a discount or coverage.
Both offer genuine wood character. EnduraShake uses tropical hardwood with a UL 2218 Class IV impact rating and ASTM E108 Class C fire rating. Cedar products and treated roof assemblies vary, so compare the actual certifications, installation details, warranty, and care requirements of the products you are considering.
Permastrong reports service life of up to 70 years under certain conditions. Actual service life depends on climate, roof design, installation, and care. Request the applicable written warranty and maintenance guidance.
The published rating is ASTM E108 Class C. That does not mean fireproof, and Class C is not Class A. Your architect or local building official should confirm whether the proposed assembly satisfies the fire requirements for your property.
Real wood can help preserve a building’s architectural character, but approval is project-specific. Historic boards, HOAs, and local authorities must review the proposed roof and its documentation.
Cost depends on roof area, design complexity, material quantities, access, and installation. Contact Permastrong with your plans or work with your architect and builder for a project-specific estimate.
Discuss installation with your architect or roofing contractor and request Permastrong’s current specifications. Contact the manufacturer about installer guidance or any available referrals for your location.
